How to Define Your Personal Style
Our personal style evolves through different stages, so taking stock of where we are in life is a great first step. Are you in the corporate world? Is it casual or are you required to dress up? Or, are you a stay at home mom needing clothes that you can “run around” in? Another example I see often as a Personal Stylist is retirement: if you don’t need those suits or business type clothes, donate them! Your personal style needs to reflect your daily activities and your current lifestyle.
Assess your Current Lifestyle
Assessing what is in your closet and getting rid of what is not serving your lifestyle or fit the way it used to can help hone in on your style, and make getting dressed easier, too. Be honest about what you typically wear during the week - even casual type clothing can be stylish!
A great first step is to come up with 3 words that describe your style.
These 3 words should be what you think of as your sort through your closet and shop for new items that fit the life you are living right now! This can create a true North Star for your style and guide you when you consider buying new items.
Pinterest Boards
Once you have a handful of images added, reflect on what is in your closet to see if you have similar items. If not (after getting rid of those clothes that don’t fit you or your lifestyle any longer), create a shopping list.
Reflect: How do you Want to Portray Yourself to the World
Personal style is all about how you feel when you wearing something - but also about how you want to present yourself to the world. Consider these questions when cleaning out your closet and buying new items:
Am I comfortable when I wear this?
Does it make me feel good, and do I feel confident in it?
Does the piece send the message I want out to the world?
Get rid of the items that don’t fit the above criteria. And if an item you are considering keeping or purchasing ticks all of the above boxes, it should be kept or added to your wardrobe!
