How to Dress for Middle Age
As a Minneapolis fashion consultant and virtual personal stylist, I see many middle-aged women struggle with how to dress for their new shape. Dressing for middle age is not about hiding your body or worrying about what’s conventional. It is about confidently knowing what flatters your shape and what you feel good in on a day to day basis.
Here are some tips to dress for your new phase in life:
Don’t Rely on Oversized Clothing.
Wearing oversized clothing may feel like a safe option, but this can add weight and distort your shape. Fitted clothing with solid texture and structure is much more flattering.
Embrace Your Midsection, Embrace Your Shape.
The most common insecurity that I see among middle-aged women is their midriff. Choose pieces that are balanced, not restrictive, for this area. Find tops that meet at the top of your pants and aim for fitted structure, not thin tops that cling to your skin.
Play Around with Proportions and Rises.
As a wardrobe stylist, I see many middle-aged women wearing the same long top and skinny jeans. Play around with high-waisted, wide leg jeans and a fitted top. This can define your waist and create an even silhouette. A wide leg jean can come in various widths, so pick one that you feel the most confident in.
Dressing for middle-age is not about hiding your body. It is about learning what looks and feels good on you presently, not what worked twenty years ago.
