How To Edit Your Closet

Editing your closet is basically giving it a refresh—keeping what still fits your current lifestyle and be honest about how often you wear each item. Clearing out the noise in your closet gets you one step closer to finding your style - and also makes dressed easier on a daily basis. Here are some tips to get started…

Start by removing each piece from your closet.

  1. Empty your closet and review pieces one at it time. Ask yourself:

  2. Does this match my current lifestyle?

  3. Does it fit properly anymore?

  4. Have I worn it in the past 6 - 12 months?

Sort Into Piles

Sort into keep, maybes and donate piles.

Keep: You love it, wear it, and it fits your current lifestyle. These are your go to items you wear on a regular basis.

Maybe: I recommend getting a few plastic bins with lids and putting items that you are unsure in a few of them until the next season. Don’t miss them the next time the season rolls around? Simply bring those bins to resell or Goodwill.

Donate/Sell: If items don’t fit, aren’t your style any longer, or hasn’t been worn in over a year - donate or sell. Be honest here, I see a lot of reasons my clients hang on to items. Just because you spent a lot of money on an item doesn’t mean you need to keep it, this may be a piece to put on Poshmark or bring to your local consignment shop.

Try Stuff On

Especially the "maybe" pile. If you wouldn’t buy it today, it’s probably not worth keeping. Again, remember those reasons to NOT keep an item, like the fact that it was expensive or an emotional tie you have to it.

Be Honest About Lifestyle

Keep clothes that match how you actually live - not the life you may think you want to live when you have gone shopping for the item. If you work from home and rarely go out, you don’t need 10 blazers or button up shirts.

Curate By Season (Optional)

You can store out-of-season clothes elsewhere like a spare bedroom closet to create less clutter in your main closet. This allows you to see what you have easier for each season - less noise = better outfit options and pairings!

Organize What You’re Keeping

Group items by category (tops, bottoms, dresses, etc.) or by color—whatever helps you get dressed easily. Matching hangers can also make a big difference.

Make a List of Gaps

While editing, you’ll probably notice things you need (like better basics or a good jacket). Write those down for intentional shopping later.

Maintain It

Do mini-edits every few months to keep things fresh. Or at the minimum, every season.
